Paintings from Inside the Vortex - an Exhibition by Shirley Dickie and Arlene McLeod
|
ARTISTS TEAM UP WITH ESTUARY PROJECT
In their newest show called “Paintings From Inside the Vortex,” contemporary artists Shirley Dickie and Arlene McLeod explore the Vortex through the use of mixed media and traditional art forms.
This is a conversation conducted in paint. Purely experiential in nature, this theme invites the audience to explore both abstract and figurative interpretations through colour, texture, form, composition and contrast. Each artist offers their individual perceptions of this process for contemplation and understanding of the deep essence of human experience and how we are connected to the natural world.
“Paintings From Inside the Vortex” runs from April 9th to May 1st, with the opening on Friday, April 9th from 7 to 9 pm. Everyone is welcome.
As an educational component, McLeod and Dickie will both be creating their second entries for the Comox Valley Estuary, Keeping it Living Fundraiser and Awareness Campaign 2010 onsite at the Muir Gallery on Saturday, April 10th between 1 and 3 pm. They will also be welcoming Caila Holbrook, Estuary Coordinator of Project Watershed, to speak about the conservation of our estuary starting at 1pm.
“I cannot think of a cause that is closer to my heart or more integral to the continued wellbeing of our Valley,” says Arlene McLeod. www.arlenemcleod.com
“Our natural environment is the underlying inspiration for all of my work, particularly this show.” commented Shirley Dickie. www.dickieart.com
The Estuary Fundraiser and Silent Auction still has an open Call for Entry and the deadline is April 30th. This is an exciting fundraising initiative to keep our estuary living. Project Watershed and the Estuary Working Group are looking for artists to contribute works [50% goes to the artist] for an online auction that will be followed by a showing in local businesses. Please go to www.keepingitliving.ca for details. Any further inquiries can be addressed to Nancy Morrison at nancyjmorrison@hotmail.com.

Forest Coast – Oil Paintings by Helen Utsal
|

You are Invited
Join Helen Utsal on March 5th as she celebrates the opening of her show Forest Coast running from March 5 – March 27, 2010 at the Muir Gallery
Exhibiting her paintings at Canadian galleries since 2006, and in Comox Valley group exhibitions such as Originals Only and Local Colours, Helen is pleased to fill the Muir gallery with her latest collection. Large canvases and panels can be viewed as windows as you walk from the ancient rainforest of Vancouver Island, out to the vast ocean and beach. Helens expressive paintings are saturated with rich colours only oil paint can achieve.
“Inspiration comes easily, trail running through rainforests on beautiful Vancouver Island, camping and exploring hidden bays on the coast. I feel compelled and challenged to try to capture the vibrancy and wealth of this place where I live. The name ‘Comox’ is taken from the original people: the K’omoks Indian band, who referred to it as ‘the land of plenty’; this could describe the whole island!
When visiting favorite ancient trees, and breathing in the mystical serenity they exude, or feeling the oceans elastic power pound through me as I struggle to hang on to my surfboard, I want to capture these feelings and share these experiences.
This collection is inspired by the earth and sea. I present them to you. May you be reminded of the immense value of our untouched natural landscape; the value of trees that are standing, and living.”
Wine and cheese will be served at the opening at 7:00 pm. The exhibition runs until March 27.

On Second Thought Artists Give Talk Saturday Oct 24 at 1pm
|
Location: At the Muir Gallery: Artists: Joyce Lindemulder, Julia Crucil, Cam Reid and Keely Chadwick Show runs until October 24
The four artists currently exhibiting at the Muir Gallery will be hosting an Artist Talk on Saturday Oct 24 at 1pm. The four local artists, Keely Chadwick, Julia Crucil, Joyce Lindemulder, and Cam Reid, met in their first year of Fine Arts at North Island College, commiserated over their habitual second thoughts, and conceived a group show of their work which would entice others to enter their world. Now entering their fourth and final at Emily Carr University, the four invite the public to hear directly from them about their experiences and about their practice. Enter their world: a world of complexity, intricacy, carefully considered responses, and divergent thinking which displays the self-reflective nature of contemporary artistic practices.
On Second Thought asks the viewer to imagine a world where everything is repeated multiple times, compulsively rethought, processed again and again. It’s a world where daily fascinations, ruminations, compulsions, obsessions, and irritants niggle under the skin, provoking multiple interpretations and constant re-working. This is the world of “On Second Thought” a group show by four local artists opening at the Muir Gallery on October 2nd.
Working in media as varied as photography, drawing, painting, printmaking, and installation, these four artists have gravitated towards various themes. The one consistent element tying the whole show together is their approach to their artistic practice.
Pushing the boundaries of figurative portraiture has led Joyce Lindemulder and Cam Reid to explore ways capturing the intangible nuances of a human being in paint. Both Lindemulder and Reid explore the human figure in their paintings, but each have found a fresh approach to a traditional medium. Lindemulder explores the enculturation of the female in her series of life size portraits of girls, using her background in design to create graphically powerfully images. Reid’s keen observations of human nature are transformed into revealing psychologically-charged portraits in which he seeks to turn the human body inside out.
Chadwick and Crucil favour more eclectic approaches, experimenting in various media, but staying true to their fascinations. Throughout Chadwick’s work, there is a continual theme of light. Whether it’s experimenting with sparklers and firecrackers to make photographic installations, creating crespuscular rays in a screenprint, or painting light emanating through tunnels, Chadwick’s work focuses on the elemental aspects of light. While Chadwick gravitates towards light, Crucil has always been fascinated with text and symbolism, probably due to her background as an English teacher. Crucil’s work has focused on investigating arbitrary symbol systems humans use to make sense of their world, either in the form of language, maps, archetypal symbols, belief systems, or organizational structures that form a current through our lives.
Regardless of medium, style, or topic, these four artists demonstrate the ability to change their minds, grow as artists and evolve as human beings. In doing so, they think in unique ways, find comfort in contradicting themselves, and embrace ambiguity as they practice their art. "On Second Thought" hints at reservations about a previous action- that need to constantly look back and where they’ve come from and rework their ideas.
The Muir Gallery is located at 440 Anderton Road in Courtenay. This event is open to the public.
