On Second Thought....
|
At the Muir Gallery: Artists: Joyce Lindemulder, Julia Crucil, Cam Reid and Keely Chadwick Opening Reception: Friday, October 2, 2009, 7-9pm Show runs until October 24
Imagine a world where everything is repeated multiple times, compulsively rethought, processed again and again. It’s a world where daily fascinations, ruminations, compulsions, obsessions, and irritants niggle under the skin, provoking multiple interpretations and constant re-working. This is the world of “On Second Thought” a group show by four local artists opening at the Muir Gallery on October 2nd.
The four local artists, Keely Chadwick, Julia Crucil, Joyce Lindemulder, and Cam Reid, met in their first year of Fine Arts at North Island College, commiserated over their habitual second thoughts, and conceived a group show of their work which would entice others to enter their world. Now entering their fourth and final at Emily Carr University, the four invite the public to enter a world of complexity, intricacy, carefully considered responses, and divergent thinking which displays the self-reflective nature of contemporary artistic practices.
Working in media as varied as photography, drawing, painting, printmaking, and installation, these four artists have gravitated towards various themes. The one consistent element tying the whole show together is their approach to their artistic practice.
Pushing the boundaries of figurative portraiture has led Joyce Lindemulder and Cam Reid to explore ways capturing the intangible nuances of a human being in paint. Both Lindemulder and Reid explore the human figure in their paintings, but each have found a fresh approach to a traditional medium. Lindemulder explores the enculturation of the female in her series of life size portraits of girls, using her background in design to create graphically powerfully images. Reid’s keen observations of human nature are transformed into revealing psychologically-charged portraits in which he seeks to turn the human body inside out.
Chadwick and Crucil favour more eclectic approaches, experimenting in various media, but staying true to their fascinations. Throughout Chadwick’s work, there is a continual theme of light. Whether it’s experimenting with sparklers and firecrackers to make photographic installations, creating crespuscular rays in a screenprint, or painting light emanating through tunnels, Chadwick’s work focuses on the elemental aspects of light. While Chadwick gravitates towards light, Crucil has always been fascinated with text and symbolism, probably due to her background as an English teacher. Crucil’s work has focused on investigating arbitrary symbol systems humans use to make sense of their world, either in the form of language, maps, archetypal symbols, belief systems, or organizational structures that form a current through our lives.
Regardless of medium, style, or topic, these four artists demonstrate the ability to change their minds, grow as artists and evolve as human beings. In doing so, they think in unique ways, find comfort in contradicting themselves, and embrace ambiguity as they practice their art. "On Second Thought" hints at reservations about a previous action- that need to constantly look back and where they’ve come from and rework their ideas.
The Muir Gallery, located at 440 Anderton Road in Courtenay, BC, will be showing the exhibition "On Second Thought" from October 2 to October 24th. An opening reception will be held on Friday, October 2th, 2009 from 7 to 9 pm and is open to the public. The four artists will also be in attendance for an artists’ talk on Saturday, October 24th.
