Me and My Shadows - A Fine Arts Sidetrack
|
Artist: Kelly Gough Opening Reception: Friday Sept 4 from 7 to 9pm Show Runs Until: Sept 25
Opening Friday September 4th at the Muir Gallery, "Me and My Shadows: A Fine Art Sidetrack" is the gallery's first show of the Fall season. The shows features the woven metal, oddities, assemblages, drawings and printwork of Comox Valley Artist Kelly Gough in her solo debut.
After 22 years of service, Kelly retired in the Comox Valley from the Canadian Forces in 2005, although she has lived on Vancouver Island over 16 years. Her art is drawn primarily from her work as a Military Social Worker and as a person living with Depression and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.
Kelly says that "to survive, to sustain remnants of personal courage, I must challenge what society says I am." She does this by transforming commonplace materials such as copper, wire, dryer lint, candy and rubber pondliner into works of uncertainty and vulnerability. Her sculpture instructors from North Island College and the Emily Carr University of Art and Design have said that Kelly's greatest artistic strength is not only the materials she uses but how she uses them. Kelly adds that "I am captivated by the infinite alliance of form and material available to me…through my art, I venture into what is hidden, what may be overlooked. I allegorically engage with shadows ". Often her work can allude to what is hidden, what lurks beneath the surface. Although she avoids the deliberate creation of referential works, Kelly recognizes that the viewing audience will come to their own conclusions about what her work may or may not mean, noting that "the unlooked for message can generate a more profound impact."
Her work does allude to potential solutions to the myriad social injustices saturating our world. "Living with the invisible challenges of an altered mind represents a microcosmic parallel to our world. These are the shadows that exist all around us. I subvert the common function of the materials to forecast that solutions to these injustices are possible but will be multifaceted, protracted and demand our deepest commitments. We can - indeed I believe we must - illuminate the shadow world of ourselves and others. I do not wish to shy away from the challenge of offering hope within a seemingly permanently damaged context. My art keeps me resilient. My goal is to produce art that inspires and heartens even the most jaded of us to act " Kelly attempts to transform her personal experiences into some sort of universal recognition: "In a world where peace inhabits the marked position, efforts to create the arresting out of the unexpected speak to the untapped global grace currently denied us".
Everyone is invited to meet Kelly Gough and view her latest and favourite works at the opening of "Me and My Shadows: A Fine Art Sidetrack" at the Muir Gallery 440 Anderton Ave (across from the Filberg Centre) Friday September 4/09 from 7pm to 9pm. The Muir Gallery is open Tuesday to Saturday from 11 am to 4 pm. This exhibit will run until Sep 25. The Arts Council of the Comox Valley is excited to support our communities' emerging artists.
