Upcoming at the Muir Ink On Paper: Transformations 2009

Artists: Channing Holland, Teresa Colby, Margaret Burns

Exhibit runs: April 3- April 25
Exhibit opening reception: April, 3, 2009

Opening
April 3 at the Muir Gallery “Ink On Paper: Transformations 2009” is the
collaborative efforts of Channing Holland, Margaret Burns and Teresa
Colby.  While the enjoyment and enthusiasm for the process of
printmaking inspires all three of these artists, each speaks with a
different voice fueled by very distinct influences, interests and
artistic training.

Channing Holland has lived in the Comox
Valley for the past 14 years and enjoys exploring the relationship that
develops between the printer and the “plate” or “carrier” of the
printing medium. Through the use of various inks, papers, inking and
colouring techniques a single image can be expressed in a multiple of
prints, each one producing a different emotional response and visual
experience.

Margaret Burns is a very independent and resourceful woman. After moving to the Island with over 40yrs of self taught experience in both arts and crafts, Margaret decided to try her hand at printmaking. For the past three years she has been enrolled in the Fine Arts printmaking program at North Island College where she studies Etching, Engraving,Silk screen, Collagraphs, and Mixed Media. She then signed on as an independent student to bring together each of the printmaking media with experimentation. The result of all the studying and experimenting has brought together an amazing collection of fine works, many of them have been collected world wide including Canada, U.S.A, U.K, Europe, and Australia.

As a parent, Teresa
Colby is rethinking her ecological footprint, her concerns about
environmental, social and political challenges facing our world inform
her art. Reoccurring images include plants forms, gardens, food issues
and human impacts on the earth.  The methods Teresa uses range from
traditional metal etching, dry-point and screen-printing to
contemporary photogravure and digital media.

All are welcome to
the opening reception at the Muir gallery on Friday April 3 from 7-9
pm. This show will run until April 25. Admission is free but donations
to the Muir are accepted.

Muir Gallery is open 11am - 4pm
Tuesday through Saturday and is located at 440 Anderton Avenue. Please
call the gallery for further information at 250-338-2983.

Ugly and Bored by Artist Gavin Maclean

AT THE MUIR GALLERY:
Opening Reception: March 6 from 7 to 9pm
Exhibition Runs: March 6 to 28
440 Anderton Ave, Courtenay
Everyone Welcome!

Ugliness and boredom fascinate me.

Opening on Friday March 6th at the Muir Gavin Maclean’s paintings provoke and
entice the viewer to question the boundaries of art. The Muir Gallery
is proud to present this talented emerging artist in his first solo
exhibition. The title of the show is “Ugly and Bored” but rest assured
there is nothing ugly or boring in Macleans work. The paintings are
insightful and alluring, technically proficient and calculated to lead
the viewer to unexpected conclusions. Maclean explains, “the sublime
and the terrible are terms that best describe my work. I try to
initially attract the viewer then once they are pulled in I show them
things they might not want to see.”

Mclean’s approach is intensely methodical blending traditional drawing methods with modern
digital techniques. While this work at first seems spontaneous and
almost cartoon like -closer examination reveals a refinement that
Maclean develops by drawing each image many times. Articulate and
knowledgeable Mclean explains his technique, “Process plays a
quintessential role in the way my art is made. I begin with a quick
sketch; based on whatever theme I have selected, to get a feel for a
character. I then draw and redraw the character dozens of time until I
feel it is strong enough visually and conveys the correct tone for the
piece. I then scan this drawing onto the computer and make sure the
line quality and size are correct. This is then projected onto
whichever picture plane I have selected.

In his artist’s statement Maclean exposes the very core of his approach to art,
“ugliness in its physical sense, psychological and sociological sense.
Alienation, apathy, anxiety, envy and many other ugly traits are
portrayed in my work. Through the use of malformed faces, half formed
bodies, missing limbs and corroded lines I attempt to make characters
show they’re psychological as well as physical ugliness. Boredom
interests me in the way it affects people. Many times I portray the
emotions, desires and actions that are caused by boredom.

The show runs until March 28th and everyone is invited to attend the opening from 7pm to 9pm this Friday.
