Members' Show 2011: Muertos and Marigolds

Recurrence

October 14 to November 15

Opening Reception: 7pm - 9pm October 14, 2011

Day of the Dead (Spanish: Día de los Muertos), is a holiday celebrated in Mexico. The holiday focuses on gatherings of family and friends to pray for and remember friends and family members who have died. Traditions connected with the holiday include building private altars honouring the deceased using sugar skulls, retablo, marigolds, and the favourite foods and beverages of the departed, and visiting graves with these as gifts. Due to occurring shortly after Halloween, the Day of the Dead is sometimes thought to be a similar holiday, although the two actually have little in common. The Day of the Dead is a time of celebration.

CVCAC asks you to explore the celebrations in which Mexican traditions are being extended to make artistic or sometimes political statements. Updated, inter-cultural versions of the Day of the Dead have been evolving in North America creating a mixture of Mexican traditions and hip, conventional altars. Colourful native dancers and music intermix with performance artists, play on traditional themes. We encourage you to bring any form of the arts to this festive members show.

Paintings from Inside the Vortex

April 1 to May 9, 2010

In their newest show called “Paintings From Inside the Vortex,” contemporary artists Shirley Dickie and Arlene McLeod explore the Vortex through the use of mixed media and traditional art forms.

This is a conversation conducted in paint. Purely experiential in nature, this theme invites the audience to explore both abstract and figurative interpretations through colour, texture, form, composition and contrast. Each artist offers their individual perceptions of this process for contemplation and understanding of the deep essence of human experience and how we are connected to the natural world.
